I love Latin music and it’s been my personal goal over the next 2 years to become fluent in Spanish. I’ve always wanted to be able to speak Spanish and this year I started learning thanks to the Free app Duolingo (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.duolingo) and the website full of free materials for language learning, http://www.memrise.com/.
In surveying the music news today, what I found most interesting was a new single released called Adrenalina including a music video from Wisin featuring Jennifer Lopez AND Enrique Iglesias.
The video is causing a lot of buzz because of the way Jennifer Lopez was interacting with Ricky Martin…
Now for those of you who don’t know…Ricky Martin is openly gay. I’m not sure that anyone is unaware of that because when he came out as gay all the women in the world said “Dang it!!!!!” and went and cried in their rooms. Ricky was a heartthrob for women all over the world and they all thought that somehow a good one got away 😦 I wish Ricky all the best and want him to be happy 😀
Then they got even closer…
What I can honestly say from all this is that they were just acting. And we obviously know that for Ricky it’s a greater stretch for him as a gay man to engage J Lo in such a way. For the sake of acting, they did a great job bringing some Latin spice to this video…but for those ladies holding out for Ricky to be straight…I don’t think you’ve got a chance. But hey! There’s still plenty fish in the sea so don’t get yourselves down for long 😀
Whether you speak Spanish or not, this song is AMAZING:
You’ve got to love that amazing light up dome they got for the video too!
The thing that I love about Latin music is the passion and specifically how Reggaeton shows the crazy talent of Latin rappers. Reggaeton is a genre that has its roots in Latin and Caribbean music. It’s one of my favorite genres for sure!
Wisin & Yandel have always been my favorite Reggaeton guys!
Wisin & Yandel are a Puerto Rican reggaeton duo that formed their career back in 1998. Wisin’s real name is Juan Luis Morera Luna and Yandel’s real name is Llandel Veguilla Malavé.
Wisin is 35 and Yandel is 37. That’s funny because I always thought Yandel was younger 🙂
Well anyways, they are heartthrobs for sure, but I have to tell you that both men are married with two children so they are as off limits as Ricky Martin! HAHA 😀
Their second, third and fourth albums were certified gold AKA 500,000 albums sold.
Then in 2004, the boys released solo albums. Wisin released El Sobreviviente and Yandel released Quien Contra Mí. The release of these albums sparked rumors of their separation, but after the albums weren’t that successful, they stayed together.
In 2005, the reggaeton duo started their own label, WY Records.
That same year they released their first album under WY Records: Pa’l Mundo. The album was their most successful album to date reaching China, Japan and Europe. The album was #1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums and was certified gold by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America).
On August 12, 2008, the mayor of their hometown of Cayey, Puerto Rico Rolando Ortíz Velázquez, recognized Wisin & Yandel as “Ambassadors from Cayey to the world” during the city’s annual Fiesta patronal.
I remember going to check out CDs back in the day when my Walmart Supercenter had such a huge selection. They also boasted a large amount of Latin music and that’s where I picked up a copy of La Revolución by Wisin & Yandel and the rest is history.
That album came out in May 2009 so I know that probably the summer of 2009 was when I discovered W&Y. Their album was amazing and not understanding Spanish was not a big deal for me. They rapped in such an explosive and fast way that I had never heard before. I was just a fan of their style, delivery, and swagger before I even looked up the English translations.
On La Revolución the boys had a song featuring 50 Cent:
That song was such a cool collaboration and music video!
Since that album purchase I have followed Wisin & Yandel all throughout the years and their music is a staple in the category of what I love to listen to.
Most recently as a pair, W&Y released a wonderful album called Líderes in 2012. The album brought us the famous duet with Jennifer Lopez called “Follow the Leader” and a subsequent spot opening for Enrique Iglesias and Jennifer on tour! They even got to perform the song on American Idol with J Lo which was pretty special!
The album also brought us a song that is 100% in English featuring Chris Brown and T-Pain along an amazing music video:
That video is hilarious! I love the whole party vibe and I had never heard Wisin speak English before so it was altogether exciting 😀
In 2013 it was announced that Wisin & Yandel have both decided to release solo albums. Wisin’s El Regreso del Sobreviviente is set to release on March 18, 2014 while Yandel’s De Lider a Leyenda was released on November 5, 2013.
De Líder a Leyenda debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums, becoming Yandel’s highest debut on the U.S. charts as solo artist. The album also debuted at #9 on the Top Rap Albums and at #76 on the Billboard 200…I know that may seem quite low but on the Billboard chart if you can close in on the top 100 it is quite a feat!
It was just announced this afternoon on Billboard that Yandel is planning a tour called VIP Tour in support of his new album! This will be his first U.S. solo tour with stops in New York, Las Vegas, and San Francisco.
Yandel will also include 3 special shows for Billboard en Concierto in New York, Chicago, and Miami from April 10-12. Those particular concerts will be themed around the Billboard Latin Music Conference & Awards that are in April.
No word on the specific tour dates yet, but I hope I may get to see him this year!
Yandel had a great collaboration with Daddy Yankee:
This song is a big deal considering what Daddy has accomplished…
Daddy Yankee became the king of Latin music with “Limbo”:
That song absolutely blew up and the amount of dances it sparked was innumerable!
However, Yandel isn’t the only one killing it on his own!
Wisin created a Limbo-esque chart topper of his own called “Que Viva La Vida”:
That song has burnt up the Latin music charts and it won’t stop 😀
I haven’t heard any rumors of Wisin & Yandel parting ways for good as a duo, but their solo success is showing that they can. I wouldn’t want to see them apart forever though and I look forward to their return to music together.
In the meantime, it’s only a few short days til Wisin’s album comes out. I can’t wait to listen to that album because the amount of star-studded collaborations is huge! He has a song with Chris Brown and Pitbull and I can’t wait to hear it!!! 😀
I’m happy to say that Wisin & Yandel are strong as solo artists and even stronger together!
