Ballyhoo! is a reggae/rock band from Baltimore, Maryland!
From left: Howi Spangler, Nick Lucera, Scott Vandrey, & Donald Spangler
Ballyhoo! was formed in July 1995 so it’s safe to say that the band is coming up on 9 years of making music together! They were still in high school at the time that the band was made! 🙂
Howi & Donald (“D”) are brothers…which you might have guessed…and they can remember back to the days when the band would play loud jam sessions in their parents’ basement.
Ballyhoo! was a name that a friend threw out there when Howi was only 14, and it stuck…even though no one knew what it meant! HAHA 😀
The definition that the band goes with is this one:
After high school graduation came and went, Ballyhoo! decided to release their first album “365-Day Weekend” 🙂
Since their first album, there have been 4 full-length albums from Ballyhoo!
Do It For The Money! (2006), Cheers! (2009), Daydreams (2011), & Pineapple Grenade (2013)
As of late, June 17th is a New Music Tuesday that I’ve been hearing about for months all because of Jennifer Lopez’ upcoming album “A.K.A.” but it’s also the day that Ballyhoo! will be releasing a brand new EP called “Halo”.
So in honor of our friends Ballyhoo! allow me to give you an EP review! 🙂
“Halo” is an EP that will contain these 3 songs:
1. Halo (Beautiful Day)
2. No Good (Sound Lounge Session)
3. The Lazy Song (Bruno Mars Cover)
Music Row Girl’s track-by track review:
“Halo (Beautiful Day)” – I really like the chill, beachy vibe of this song because it makes you get in the mindset of the beach itself. Sun, wind, sky, ocean, sand, and so many people enjoying it all in unity. There’s just something about those vocals paired with the sound of reggae instruments that makes me happy. Ballyhoo! has such a polished sound that leaves you begging for more and more music from them.
“No Good (Sound Lounge Session)” – This song is not what you hear every day…it’s about a guy telling a girl that she’s no good…and as far as I know, it’s usually the other way around. I really like the positive vibe that this song has even with the harsh lyrics to a former flame. This is reggae music at its finest and dare I say: “Ballyhoo! Cool!”
“The Lazy Song (Bruno Mars Cover)” – This version is an incredible one with so much more excitement than Bruno’s version if I do say so myself! 😀 It features strong vocals and distorted, electric guitar. It has more of a punk rock vibe than reggae, but you won’t hear me complaining!
You can take a listen to their version of “The Lazy Song” here:
Thank you to Rebecca & the team at Big Picture Media for choosing me to write about Ballyhoo! 🙂
Don’t forget to pick up “Halo” on Tuesday & go see Ballyhoo! in a city near you:
