Last night I had the joy of going to see a show during Tin Pan South week…
…that celebrated some of the world’s best Pop music songwriters!
I’m always pumped when March comes around because that means Tin Pan South is upon us! HAHA
TPS is an incredible 5 day festival around Nashville in local venues that celebrates the songwriters who are behind the scenes writing all the hit songs we know and love! The festival is celebrating its 23rd year this year and is put on by NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International).
From Tuesday to Saturday there are so many different writers you can go see around the city! I would love to do the passes next year which I hear for only $90 you can get a lanyard that will get you into any shows all week long! NOW that’s what I call a deal!!! Otherwise, if you’re a starving blogger like me, you go to the show(s) you want to and pay the door price to get in.
I always end up going to see Kara DioGuardi every single year because I love her DUH and because she’s one of the most well known songwriters in pop music. She’s written some of the most incredible songs that I know and love. The list could go on forever, but specifically: “Lost” by Faith Hill, “Undo It” by Carrie Underwood, “Walk Away” by Kelly Clarkson, “Sober” by P!nk, “Ain’t No Other Man” by Christina Aguilera, “Pieces of Me” by Ashlee Simpson, and most recently “Heartbeat Song” by Kelly Clarkson!
Last night was a smörgåsbord of Pop music songwriting extraordinaires! Kara DioGuardi (as I mentioned), Jeff Cohen, Sacha Skarbek, and Jamie Scott!!
Now for those who don’t usually go to “songwriter rounds” it basically goes in the format of the songwriters sitting in an even line along the stage and it goes in “rounds” where each writer will sing 1 song and then the rotation starts over again until you’ve got a good 4-6 songs performed from each writer 🙂
To make a long story short I’ll take you through each writer’s setlist, if you will…
Jeff is a seasoned songwriter! He’s always played at Tin Pan with Kara since I’ve seen her for the 3rd year in a row now and last night he played his hit songs “Crazy For This Girl” by Evan and Jaron, “In Her Eyes” by Josh Groban, “Holy Water” by Big and Rich, and “Postcard From Paris” by The Band Perry. Jeff was wonderful as he always is and we even got an impromptu joke out of him…
G, B flat, and C walk into a bar and what did the bartender say to them?
“Sorry, we don’t serve minors.”
That made me LOL! 😀
Let it be known too that Jeff was the organizer of the songwriter round last night and since I failed to mention it until now HAHA it was at The Listening Room Cafe on 2nd Avenue!
Jamie is a hot to trot, young whippersnapper that I’ve been hearing about a lot recently! His voice is REEEDICUELUSS! He has such a strong set of pipes and he was a standout in the room last night! He sang songs on his album: “Gold”, “Carry You Home”, and some little unknown song he wrote for One Direction called “Story Of My Life” HAHA I sang my heart out on that one and he sang it beautifully 😀
Sacha was fierce! Yes that was a Beyoncé reference! HAHA More like a Beyoncé pun! Either way, I’m just trying to say that this guy got better as the night went on! The songs that he’s written are so impressive! He sang “You’re Beautiful” by James Blunt, “Cold Shoulder” by Adele, and “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus! Some pretty impressive cuts and he was a very delightful guy!
And last but certainly not least, Kara! She was great and funny as always 🙂 She unfortunately was sick with the croup and was only able to sing three songs for us which were “Heartbeat Song” by Kelly Clarkson, “Sober” by P!nk, and “Undo It” by Kelly Clarkson. I always love when she performs “Sober” and I’ll give it to her for being a good sport and singing as much as she possibly could!! I did love it when Kara went off the cuff and said that us coming to the show was a donation and our show of support for songwriters. She mentioned that it’s a scary time in the music industry where the next generation of songwriters as well as songwriters now may not be able to afford being a full-time songwriter. I love her for shedding light on that topic and for thanking us for our support!
Kara was joined by a few of the songwriters she supports and holy crap this one girl made you hang on every single word! I don’t know her name and they only said it really briefly one time, but the lyrics were “You’re more to me than all these broken things”.
Overall, what a night it was for songwriting and for Nashville! I had a great time and apparently I have some major research to do on who exactly that mystery songwriter was! HAHA I’ll keep you in the know!!!
Thanks NSAI for bringing Kara & all the amazing writers to Nashville this week!
