Christina Perri dazzles in Nashville

I had the joy of seeing singer/songwriter, Christina Perri, last night for the first time!

I bought my ticket a while back for this show at Nashville’s own Cannery Ballroom because I had never seen Christina on tour before, and had always wanted to! I’m a big fan of her powerful songwriting and the inner-strength she shows in the delivery of her lyrics! 😀

Christina Perri is 27 years old and hails from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania!

Most people remember her for her debut single “Jar of Hearts” after it was featured on my favorite talent show: “So You Think You Can Dance” in 2010…

 

“Jar of Hearts” went on to sell over 3 million copies in the US & became a global hit!

A few months later, Miss Perri released her first EP: The Ocean Way Sessions

When “Jar of Hearts” gained global attention, Christina was approached by record labels and she ended up signing a record deal with Atlantic Records!

Then on May 10, 2011, Christina released her debut album “Lovestrong”

My favorite song from that album besides “Jar of Hearts” is “Arms”:

 

That song is just so pleasant and adorable 😀

Then in 2012, she wrote & recorded “A Thousand Years” for the movie: “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn”. That song was a game-changer for me! It is so beautiful and such a well-written love song! Not to mention…perfect for Twilight!

That gorgeous song went on to sell over 4 million copies in the US (certified 4× platinum).

Christina’s second EP, A Very Merry Perri Christmas, was released in October 2012:

This tour is known as “Head Or Heart” & is in support of Christina’s incredible followup to her debut album: “Head or Heart” which was released on April 1, 2014!

Last night, Christina showcased the opening act “Birdy” who turned out to be another female singer/songwriter.

It wasn’t until Christina told us “Can you believe she’s only 17?!” that I realized she was! I had no idea Birdy was that young when she was onstage! HAHA

Birdy focused on beautiful vocals and catchy melody loops for days! 😀

She was very delightful and I knew that I knew her name because of her cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love” when she performed it last night 🙂

This was one of the earliest shows I’ve been to in awhile!! The show started right on time with Birdy at 7:30 (that rhymed hahaha) and Birdy was done and flew backstage by 8 pm!

Then there was a 33 minute intermission and Christina came on stage at 8:33 pm 😀

The songs were breathtaking! I was definitely reminded that:

A) I should listen to her music more

AND

B) I need to listen to singer/songwriters more in general!!!

What I can tell you about Christina is that she is way more amazing than what I realized! She sang incredibly the whole night and to my delight…she was VERY talkative to the audience!! She even told us in the beginning that she would try to stop being goofy, but my friend & I were like “No! No!” hahaha 😀

Butterfly was breathtaking with the introduction: “This is about an a**hole” HAHA!

We heard favorites like “Arms” & the captivating “A Thousand Years” as well as a crazy cover song I’ve never heard played out…”Lollipop” by The Chordettes!

Then Christina sang “Human” and hit a note that was just one of the most beautiful things that I’ve ever heard! It was incredible!

Then she sang a song called “I Believe” and said it was her favorite part of the show! 😀 She divided the crowd in a way I had never seen done before! HAHA She divided the front section into section A, the middle into section B, and the last section into section C.

Section A (my section) was to sing “This is not the end of me. This is the beginning.” Section B was to sing “Hold On.” And finally, Section C was to sing “I am still alive.”

So we sang all of those parts and then kept singing them while Christina and the band went offstage! We sang that for a minute before they came back on! HAHA

Then Christina came back and sang her adorable acoustic song “Penguin” while telling the crowd that if you brought anyone special…this is the time to makeout! HAHAHA She’s such a goofball and I just love her goofiness!

Then Christina sang “Jar of Hearts” flawlessly, which was what she described as “the song that changed my life” 😀

Overall the show was delightful and featured some incredible vocal talent! I’m not sure at precisely what point of the show it was, but Christina told us that she had a lot of trouble trying to become an artist in the beginning due to fear! She told us that she was afraid at first to release her music and she thought that her songs were “diary songs” and nobody would want to hear them!

*Boy was she wrong!* 🙂

So it’s safe to say that Jessie is getting down to business and preparing to grace the world with another collection of amazing music! 😀

I’m excited to hear new music from Jessie even though I just got her 2nd album!

Christmas came late last year, but Jessie still gave me the best 17 song present to celebrate the holiday season!

Alive has not been released in the US yet…I repeat…Jessie’s J’s second album is not available in the United States of America! 😦

I didn’t fly out of the country…even though it was tempting to do so! Instead, I let my friends at Amazon.com send me an Import from Thailand! 😀

The album is incredible and I have no idea why Jessie’s label is holding “Alive” back from being released in the US. They say they want to throw US producers on it to make it more friendly to the domestic market, but c’mon! This album is PURE PLATINUM! 🙂

I first heard of Jessie J from my dad! Yes…my dad! LOL

My dad was watching Saturday Night Live one night and he called me into the room and said “Hey Stell, there’s this girl performing on Saturday Night Live. Her name is Jessie J. Have you heard of her?” And I said “Uhhmmm. No!”

So that was my introduction to Jessie which is quite special really! 😀 After that SNL performance, I got intrigued about who in the world Jessie J was since I had never heard of her before.

And then “Price Tag” happened:

That song features the rapper B.o.B and made her famous in the US!

Just so you know…Jessie J’s real life name is Jessica Cornish and she’s only 26 years old 🙂 She was born in Chadwell Heath (East London) and raised in London, England.

I had to get her second album right away…even if I had to import it…because I was dying for new music from Jessie since her first album “Who You Are” was released in 2011.

Jessie was the queen of “lip art” in promotion for her debut album!

The Veronicas sign deal/new album coming!

I just about had a heart attack when I read the news about The Veronicas! They are one of the best duos that I know and one of my favorite bands!

The news just broke early this morning that the sister-act will release a third studio album later this year, through their new global deal with Sony Music Entertainment!

Lisa & Jess formed the Veronicas in their hometown of Brisbane, Australia back in 1999! Here we are 15 years later with only two full length albums 😦 #Sadness

I’m not trying to be a Debbie Downer because to be completely honest…the news of their new global record label deal & an album that is seriously coming out this year made me fist pump like a young, agile Tiger in the Woods!

I was lucky enough to see The Veronicas open for The Jonas Brothers back in the day and I also saw them on their solo tour at my favorite concert venue besides The Ryman:

That show was May 1st, 2009 so I haven’t seen them in almost 5 years! 😦 The show was the day after my birthday and they even signed something for me with the message “Happy Birthday”

Discover: G.R.L.

Here at Music Row Girl, I am Pro-Girl Groups and this new one is noteworthy!

G.R.L. was formed by Robin Antin in February 2013.

Robin, or as I like to call her: the Fairy Godmother of girl groups, was the lady responsible for forming The Pussycat Dolls, Girlicious, and The Paradiso Girls.

What I thought was originally cool about G.R.L. is that I feel like I already know them kind of…well at least 2 of them!

G.R.L. features 2 girls that I’ve known from former exposure to the music industry’s limelight. The 5 member girl group features Lauren Bennett (a former member of The Paradiso Girls) and Simone Battle (who almost got to the Top 12 on the US version of Simon Cowell’s The X Factor).

Although being a member of two girl groups isn’t all that Lauren Bennett is known for…she was also the girl featured in “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO!!!

I will insert that song here, because I’m sure you’ve never heard it! 😉

EVERYDAY I’M SHUF-FULL-IN!

As for the other 3 G.R.L. members, I can tell you that Paula was on Season 6 of So You Think You Can Dance, she danced in the movie Burlesque alongside Christina Aguilera & Cher, and she was in the re-formed version of The Pussycat Dolls.

Emmalyn Estrada is a Canadian pop singer of Filipino descent which is a pretty amazing thing! 🙂 And she can do “Cups” which I highly respect…

I’ve never heard or seen “Knife song” and that made me squirm! OMG

And last, but not least: Natasha Slayton began dancing at age four, studied piano and music theory at eight, and starting writing songs at nine! She began acting professionally at age 9 too and appeared in several TV shows including playing William H. Macy’s daughter on the animated show The Lion Hearts! She also took up guitar at 13 and performed her own soulful, acoustic songs at live music venues around L.A., including The Troubadour and The Knitting Factory! Gosh! Talk about talented!!!

So there is a fair share of talent in the group and it sure seems like Robin Antin chose the right girls for the job!

On June 16th: G.R.L. released their debut single “Vacation”:

You’ve got to love the video considering there is a stack of multicolored pancakes and an appearance from Paul DiGiovanni of my beloved boy band Boys Like Girls. If you have the chance to see them…RUN don’t WALK! They played my favorite show so far in Nashville, and in this town: that’s saying A LOT! 😉

“Vacation” was included on the soundtrack for the animated movie The Smurfs 2 so congratulations girls!! It also goes down in history as the “first material” AKA first song released by G.R.L.

The girls have confirmed that they are working with superstar producers: Dr. Luke, Max Martin, Cirkut, Darkchild, and Lukas Hilbert, for their debut album which is set to release sometime in 2014!

On January 28th it was announced on G.R.L.’s Facebook page that “Show Me What You Got” will be included on the 49th volume of the Now That’s What I Call Music! 🙂

On March 14, the girls performed at the iTunes Festival at SXSW, and opened for the incredible DJ Zedd and their new friend Pitbull.

Robin Antin scored big with this one and I’m sure that they got great exposure 🙂

At the festival, G.R.L. performed the songs “Girls Are Always Right”, “Show Me What You Got”, “Vacation”, “Rewind”, and “Ugly Heart”. Then they returned to the stage to join Pitbull for “Wild Wild Love” 🙂

The girls went to see fellow Smurfs 2 soundtrack girl, Britney Spears, in Las Vegas last night and even had a performance of their own at the Flamingo!!!

There are appearances in this film from industry heavy-hitters like Irving Azoff (their manager), Ian Rogers (Beats Music CEO), and Bob Lefsetz (Music Journalist).

The band was more than $2 million in debt as they began making the album “This Is War,” and the movie documents their attempt to exit their 9-year-old contract with EMI!

Quite an interesting documentary indeed if you ask me!

Jared claims: “Artifact is not anti-record label, it’s anti-greed. It’s about artists examining the difficulty between the conflict of art and commerce, how corruption can kill dreams.”

This movie seems like it will bring a lot more attention to the band…as if they need it though! They are on tour now through September and they have already set the Guiness World Record for “most live shows played in support of one album” 😀

Drake + Lint Roller = social media frenzy

I saw this story yesterday after writing a post about Nicki Minaj and I can’t stop laughing!

That is Drake. And that is a lint roller.

YMCMB (Lil Wayne’s record label) rapper, Drake, was seen using a lint roller “court-side” at a Toronto Raptors vs. Brooklyn Nets game on Tuesday night and he singlehandedly set social media ablaze!!! 😀

It happened to be so convenient that the cameras caught him taking out a lint roller and doing work on his pants! HAHA Good job to the camera man who filmed it!!! 🙂

My family had a thing for lint rollers a few years ago when we had a short-haired white cat that shed on every piece of clothing that we owned! We had to lint roll things all the time and we easily had 2 rollers in every room of the house and 12 in the hall closet!

So I’m no stranger to lint rollers at all! 😉

Lint Rollers weren’t famous before Tuesday night…but now they’re a sensation! 😀

Nicki Minaj is one of my favorite people & my favorite rapper in the game of Hip Hop!

Now miss Minaj comes from very humble beginnings as a girl born and raised Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago.

It’s that teeny tiny island above Venezuela!

Her real name is Onika Tanya Maraj and she decided to use Nicki Minaj as her stage name.

Nicki was born December 8, 1982 and is currently 31 years young 🙂

The queen of wigs has gone natural!

I just read a couple days ago / watched an interview where Nicki says that she knew she was going to go back to her natural hair eventually and I guess we can say she’s very grown up! No more wig-a-palooza for Miss Minaj! 😉

Nicki has stated that her upbringing lacked discipline, and caused her to “seek out and practice self-discipline”…which is definitely the best idea a young girl could have in that situation 😀

Despite her difficult upbringing, Nicki Minaj has rose to stardom as Lil Wayne’s pride and joy! She’s of course signed to his label Young Money Cash Money Baby (YMCMB) alongside superstar rapper from Toronto, Drake!

Nicki is known to be a singer, rapper, dancer, former American Idol judge, diva, fashionista, and a girl that will put her name on anything because people will buy it all day long!

I’ve heard the buzz and seen promos that Nicki will star in a film opposite Cameron Diaz!!!

Rob Thomas shares 2 hours in Nashville

Rob Thomas is a character and I never knew that until I saw him at The Ryman last night!

It was such a treat because I got a ticket yesterday…the day of show…for a mere 40 bucks! How could I say no?! 😀

I was so surprised by how charming Rob was!! He told us from the very beginning of the show: “You guys are here with me for the next 2 hours and we’re going to share a moment together!”

My heart melted right then and there! What a sweet thing to hear from the artist you came to see! 🙂

For those of you who are out of the loop: Rob Thomas is the lead singer of a band called Matchbox Twenty and is a well known songwriter on his own!

Matchbox formed in 1995 and it wasn’t until 10 years later that Rob decided to try his hand at solo work! Rob has released 2 solo albums and an EP:

Last night was really special and I’m so glad that I got to go!!! I had never seen Rob Thomas in concert before and I was really excited to hear that amazing voice of his!

He never hit one bad note! Seriously!! The man was flawless, and his voice was brilliant! 😀

I love how he talked about turning a record into the label and having anxiety! I’ve never heard anyone else talk about that and it was such a neat conversation! 🙂

Rob was hilarious and told funny stories to the audience as well!!

One of my favorite parts was when he said, “This is the part when that last song was the beginning of the encore and you guys act like we just went offstage and you’re here like ‘I wonder where they went’ (the band & Rob)…and then you clap and then we come back on stage and you’re all shocked. And then we play more songs!” LOL 😀

His second to last song was “Smooth” that he wrote and recorded with famous guitarist, Carlos Santana, who is taking the stage at The Ryman tonight! Rob told us the bad news that Santana would not be playing or coming or to play. I kind of just waited for a minute like yeah right! He’s in town! HAHA But to my surprise…there was no Santana last night!

Lorde postpones her Australia Tour!

Everyone’s favorite, creepy pop-star Lorde has been forced to postpone her tour in Australia due to illness! 😦

She is going to head home to New Zealand to rest up! That’s home for her!! 😀

Lorde isn’t the only popstar postponing tours due to illness…we all know that the ever controversial young lady, Miley Cyrus, just had to official postpone the rest of her US tour until August due to an allergic reaction that may take months to fully heal!!

Spice Girls reunion won’t happen again…

Bad news for Spice Girls fans…it looks like there is not going to be another reunion!

I said not because I don’t want to say never! 😦

I don’t forsee there ever being an entire reunion, where the girl band goes on tour, makes new music, and hangs outs together on a regular basis…but at least we have the memories right?!

The last reunion we can recall from the Spice Girls was at the 2012 Olympics in London…

 

That performance excited me to no end! Let me just say! 😀 Yes…I am a fan!

I do recall a few years ago…in 2008 to be exact…there was an official Spice Girls reunion and tour! OH the excitement! 🙂

The Spice Girls reunion was announced on June 28, 2007 with plans for world tour in December and January. The girls hadn’t performed onstage together since Ginger Spice AKA Geri Halliwell quit in May 1998! It took the girls nearly 10 years to reunite! WOW!

They even recorded a new song for us called “Headlines”:

 

Sporty Spice said in the past: “It was amazing, it was magical. We could never recreate it”.

I’ve got to admit that the Spice Girls were magical in their own little way and when I grew up, they were a staple in my musical life! That and there’s also this little movie they made…

That movie is hysterical! And the bus scene is my favorite!

In the news today, I heard that Victoria Beckham AKA Posh Spice had an awkward run-in with Mel B AKA Scary Spice at the gym.

Vic & Mel are reportedly on bad terms since Vic made it clear that she wouldn’t be interested in reuniting with her former Spice Girls bandmates 😦

Victoria was with her hot as heck soccer star husband David Beckham at an LA gym to take their son Brooklyn to a class, when all of a sudden…they ran into into Mel B!

They also have daughter Harper who sticks her tongue out at paparazzi! LOL 😀

A source reports, “Posh was visibly shocked to see Mel in the class – she normally goes to one in West Hollywood. It was really awkward, so Posh waved, but Mel blanked her.”

Blanked means to ignore…I had to Google the meaning because the source is British and I am not! LOL 😉

Mel was probably too busy sculpting her abs to notice Vicky B!

And let me just say that I find it funny how catty women can be!! They can’t just be cordial?? Is the feud really that bad?

At 40 years old, Victoria has made a name for herself as a fashion designer and of course as the wife of David Beckham!

Mel B has expressed a desire in the past to reunite the Spice Girls and keep touring together, but Victoria has no interest in giving it a go again 😦

However in a nice turn of events the source had this to report: “At the end of the class, Vic caught Mel and they chatted for about a minute – it looked uncomfortable. It sounded like Vic asked Mel if she still held a grudge and said it was unnecessary to ‘act like a child’ in public. Mel started to get riled up, so David stepped up.”

You know it has to be pretty bad when Mr. Beckham had to insert himself in the conversation too!

Victoria admitted that she ‘just wanted to be elsewhere’ during the Spice Girls reunion in 2008! To her defense, she admitted that the fashion designing she was doing interested her more. But what about the beloved Spice Girls?!

I need them!!! 😦

The Spice Girls formed in 1994 and made their mark in the 90’s with an abrupt end in 2000.

The group consisted of five members: Melanie Brown AKA “Scary Spice”, Melanie Chisholm AKA “Sporty Spice”, Emma Bunton AKA “Baby Spice”, Geri Halliwell AKA “Ginger Spice”, and Victoria Beckham AKA “Posh Spice”.
